Hey everyone! How’s your new year going? We’re happy to say our new year is going good. KI placed 2nd in Divine Designs iPhone Instigation contest. Glad to have placed because it was entered on a whim. 8D Furthermore, I’m looking for more contests to join, just because it’s awesomely good fun. If anyone’s having any, feel free to use the comments to advertise.
Onto Tutorial Thursday, recently I got a request email and for this week’s tutorial we’re doing another adventure into reds. This tutorial is more intense with the colors. In all reality, it makes reds and oranges appear where there were none to begin with. So, let’s do this.
Alright. So first we take a cropped 100 x 100 base. Doesn’t matter really but the blander the colors, you’ll get about the same result as I got. This tutorial works especially well with manga bases that you’ve colored yourself. Get yourself a texture you’d like to use as a background. This icon works as well without a background. But, it’s your choice.
Your first layer should be your background. Second layer should be your cropped base. Set your base to multiply 100%. You can make any little edits you want now. Usually, if a part of the background runs through an important part of the icon, use a white or gray to cover up or “erase” some of the background so it doesn’t interfere with the icon’s subject.
Now let’s get to the adjustment layers.
Layer > New Adjustment Layer > Hue/Saturation. You just need to edit ‘Master’ by entering these numbers into the field or adjusting the slider, kay? Whichever. Here ya go.
- Hue: -8
- Saturation: +54

Alrighty, I’m going to try an keep up with this. So much so that I made hotmail remind me of it the day before so I can’t forget. For the first tutorial, it’s rather beginner level. So, if you’re uber experienced, well, then, this might be stuff you already know.

We’re going to make reds pop with one easy layer. Here we go.
- Open a new 100×100 canvas in photoshop. Add your cropped, resized (whatever) base for Layer 1.
- Let’s get things looking crisp. Go to Filter > Sharpen > Sharpen and then click.
- Now, let’s get those shades of red going. Go to Layer > New Adjustment Layer > Selective Color. Now use the dropdown to select the colors and now input these CMYK values for each.

Well, it’s tutorial time. And, as I was thinking about cool, refreshing water, I decided to write a tutorial. Isn’t that decent of me? I KNOW RIGHT? My decency aside, let’s get on with this tutorial. I used a picture of Rei Fujita because well, he was just hot and staring at me.
UPDATE. Ka-chan informed me that I didn’t actually link the picture to the file… So, I had to redo the psd over again. I think I got it right. Looks pretty much the same in my honest opinion. Quick note, I think I over sharpened the picture. I tend to do that sometimes.

For this tutorial I used only the resources that can be found on this site so make sure you check the gallery for more textures, brushes and icon bases xD.
From this:

To this:

First take your base texture that you can find in the daring ‘n dirty pack in the gallery, uploaded by neko-ka-san.

Then take your icon base and place it above the texture. Modify the size so that the two characters are above the circle of the main texture. Now we’re gonna use layer masks so don’t run away cause it’s quite easy xD. Go to Layer->Add layer mask and then click Hide all. Now take a soft round brush around the size of the circle you see in the texture and click on the hidden layer. You’ll see the face of the two characters appearing exactly in the circle from the texture like this.

Now take this texture that you can find it in the gallery in the Colorful Textures pack and put it above all the layers on Lighten 100%.

You can make a new layer and add some text or a brush, we have an icon text brushes pack in the gallery as well that you can use.
What are we gonna do next is play a little bit with the colors. Go to Layer->New adjustment layer and choose Curves. Now in the Channel box click on RGB and make the input 114 and the output 138. All you need to do is place your cursor on the line and then write the coordinates.
Go to Layer again New adjustment layer and this time choose Selective color. Now modify the following:
Reds:
cyan: -100%
magenta: 0
yellow: 100%
black: 100%
Yellows:
cyan: -100%
magenta: 100%
yellow: 100%
black: 0
Neutrals:
cyan: 27%
magenta: -17%
yellow: -23%
black: -1%
Change the layer opacity between 40%-50%.
Yet another adjustment layer, don’t worry you’re almost done xD, this time Hue/Saturation and Edit the Master like this: Hue: 0, Saturation: +18, Lightness: 0. As a final touch you can make a new layer and fill it with a navy color (I usually use #00072C) and then set the layer on exclusion.
And now you’re done! xD I’ll upload the PSD to the gallery in case I lost you at some point through those adjustment layers haha. Hope you enjoyed it!

I just thought it was about time to make another one so here it is xD.
We’re gonna go from this:

To this:

Take your base layer and copy it once. Put the above layer on Soft Light 100%. Set the following layer

between the normal layer base and the soft light one. Set it on multiply and then go to Edit->Transform and click Vertical and then Horizontal.
Now you’re going to set this layer

above the previous texture one and put it on Darken. I pretty much erased everything around those pink words and yellow swirls so the avatar wouldn’t look too dark. You can do as you please as long as it looks good xD.
After that’s done take (yet another)this texture and place it above the previous two on Multiply:

Okay up until now you’ve been placing your textures between your normal base and your soft light base now, with the next light texture, you’re gonna place it above the soft light base on Lighten. I erased bits of it here and there:

Go to Layer->New Adjustment Layer->Channel Mixer and put the following setting:
*Red:
red: 104%
green: -10%
blue: 4%
constant: 8%
*Green:
red: 8%
green: 94%
blue: 8%
constant: -2%
*Blue:
red: -24%
green: 18%
blue: 92%
constant: 6%
Go again to Layer->New Adjustment Layer but this time select a Selective Color layer with the following settings:
*Reds:
cyan: -25%
magenta: 0
yellow: 29%
black: 0
*Yellows:
cyan: 27%
magenta: 0
yellow: -29%
black: 0
*Greens:
cyan: 100%
magenta: -100%
yellow: -100%
black: 0
*Cyans:
cyan: 100%
magenta: 29%
yellow: -100%
black: 0
Make a new layer and fill it with this color #000625 and set it on Exclusion 30% Opacity. Take this light texture and placed it above all the other layers on Lighten:

Just one more layer and you’re done! xD For the last time go to Layer->New Adjustment Layer->Brightness/Contrast with the following settings: Brightness 10% / Contrast 10% and that’s that.
Here’s my layer palette for a better understanding:

Thank you for reading.

I guess it was about time I made a new one haha. Another easy to make and cute tutorial for you lovely users and guests of KI.
We’ll be going from this:

To this:

Take your base, crop it, modify it, do whatever you like until you get something that looks nice. Note that for this tutorial it’s best if you use something with light colors like the picture from above.
Copy your layer and set it to Multiply 57%. Make a new layer and hit Ctrl+Alt+Shift+E (Apply image) and then go to Filter->Sharpen->Smart Sharpen (if you’re using an older version of PS and you don’t have Smart Sharpen, normal sharpen will do as well). If you think your picture is too sharpen lower the opacity of the layer, if not leave it as it is.
Take this texture and set it on Darken 100%, placing it somewhere in your avatar where it looks good.

Take this second texture and place it above all the others on Darken 100%. For both this texture and the previous one you can also try Multiply if it looks better instead of Darken.

Now go to Layer->New Fill Layer->Solid Color and and fill it with this color #98c9f6. Set it on Color Burn 70%.
At this point you can use a Light Texture above your writing so it will look prettier. I chose this and set it on Lighten 100%. Go to Edit->Transform->Flip Vertical and move it around until you get something that you like.

Make another Fill Layer this time with the color #e3ca9a and set it on Overlay 75%. Make yet another Fill Layer with #00052d and set it to Exclusion 100%.
Next you need to go to Layer->New Adjustment Layer->Selective Color and put the following setting:
REDS: -100, 0, 0, +30
NEUTRALS: +30, -10, +25, +8
BLACKS: -40, 0, 0, +14
Now just go to File->Save as select your file name, choose PNG as format and you’re done. Thank you for reading.
Tutorial Six

This is an easy to make tutorial that require just a few steps in order to get the desired result. You’ll need to use a filter called smart sharpen. If you have an older version of PS and this option doesn’t appear then don’t worry, you can pretty much get the same result with the normal sharpen.
We’re gonna go from this:

To this:

Open your image, crop it, modify it until you get something that you like. Go to Filter->Sharpen->Smart Sharpen and click the default settings. If you don’t have Smart Sharpen then normal one will do.
Duplicate your layer and set the above one on Screen, Opacity between 60-70%; it really depends on how dark your image is.
Now go to Layer->New Adjustment Layer and create the following layers:
*Brightness/Contrast:
-Brightness: -12
-Contrast: 14
*Selective Color:
-Reds:
Cyan: -83
Magenta: +98
Yellow: +91
Black: +64
-Neutrals:
Cyan: -14
Magenta: -1
Yellow: +14
Black: +5
-Blacks:
Cyan: +3
Magenta: 0
Yellow: 0
Black: -7
*Selective Color:
-Reds:
Cyan: -78
Magenta: +36
Yellow: +9
Black: -26
-Yellows:
Cyan: -18
Magenta: +42
Yellow: -50
Black: +7
-Neutrals:
Cyan: +45
Magenta: +34
Yellow: -14
Black: +37
*Hue/Saturation:
-Master
Hue: +10
Saturation: -11
Lightness: -4
With that done just make a new normal layer, fill it with a navy color (I used #00042a) and set it on Exclusion. If you want to make the avatar look a bit more yellowish just duplicate the Exclusion layer and set the above one on Opacity 50%. All you need to do now is add your border and you’re done.
Other avatars done with the same technique:

Tutorial Five

So a few people have asked me about providing a coloring tutorial for manga icons. I prolly do this the hard way or there might be a quicker way but before I wasn’t using any layers at all. Just coloring the picture. This way, to me is easier. And I like to play with opacity a lot.
We’re going from this…

To this…

If it’s your first time coloring, pick something easy like this. Chibi forms of characters are really the easiest to do since there isn’t much detail involved.
First of all, start with a clean scan. Try to download it straight from the scanlator or raw. Manga viewing site scans are often pixelated and your finished product will look messy.
If you’re happy with your scan, crop and resize it. Don’t make it 100 x 100 (icon size) unless you’re really confident about the lines. Like you know where a shirt ends. Or you know which is skin and which is hair. It gets a bit tricky. So I like to color, merge the layers and THEN resize it to icon size.
Now with your base, appropriate size and clean, we can make the lines darker… If you choose to. If you think your lines are fine, perfect.
To make the lines darker, I do not sharpen. I use overlay.

+Make a new layer.
+Use marquee tool to select the whole image.
+ Edit > Fill
+ In the pop-up,
Contents:
Use: Color and then pick #303030. (Dark gray almost black.) Hit Okay after you’ve picked your color.
Blending:
Mode: Normal
Opacity: 100%
After your scan has become a gray square, double click on the layer in the layer & paths window.
The Layer Style window should come up.
It should be on Blending Options immediately.
Under General Blending, will be Blend Mode: and Opacity:
Select ‘Overlay’. Your manga scan’s lines will look darker immediately. If you think it’s too dark, you can set the opacity lower to make it a little lighter. I usually set it at 50%.
When you’re happy with the opacity, hit okay.
Now, we can do the skin.
Make a new layer and select your polygonal lasso tool. I use this because it’s easier for me to go along the lines myself. You can use the Magic Wand tool or Magnetic Lasso Tool as well. Whatever you’re comfortable with. Select a part of the skin with whatever tool you’re using. Make sure it’s just the skin!
Now let’s give it some color. Edit > Fill
Contents Use: Color (I use #EF913E.)
Blending Mode: Normal Opacity: 100%
Make sure you’ve repeated this for all the skin and gotten everything that orange color. Also make, sure it’s all on the same layer.

When you’re satisfied you’ve gotten all the skin, double click on the skin layer and play with your opacity. I usually set it on 35%. It looks really nice that way. Anything higher would make them look like they stepped out of a spray tan booth.

Now you can repeat this process for clothing and accessories. Make new layer. Fill with color and then mess with opacity.

Make new layer. Fill with color and then mess with opacity.

Make new layer! Fill with color and then mess with opacity!

Coloring is endless and you can play with colors, make hair outrageous and do whatever floats your boat. ^__^ And now she’s ready for an icon.
Tutorial Four

Masks are very useful when you want to make an avatar or sig in a rather short time and have no idea what to do with it or you’re too lazy to cut it. I’m gonna try to explain this as easy as possible, if I fail then…well that means I’m a failure lmao =D.
We’re going to go from this:

To this:

I know the quality of the pic isn’t that great but Sawako looks so cute in it haha XD.
Cut your original pic but make sure that when you resize it to make it smaller than 100×100. Around 90×90 should be fine. Move it around in one of the corners and duplicate it (right mouse click->Duplicate layer), set the above layer on soft light. Make a new layer and hit Ctrl+Alt+Shift+E so you’ll stamp everything that you did until now (make sure that at this point your background layer, which is usually white, is either deleted, unselected or transparent). After this delete your previous 2 layers since you don’t need them anymore.
Okay now take this beautiful texture and set it underneath your current layer.

Time for the mask! LOL Okay select once more the layer with Sawako and then go to Layer->Add vector mask->Hide all. Your layer is gone lmao no it’s not gone although you wont be able to see it at the moment. Check your layer palette, on the right side of your layer there’s a new, black one. That’s your layer vector. Select it and then take a white brush around 70-80 px and click on the area where your character is. And like magic it appears again! Only this time its taken the form of the brush you used.
Okay, just a few more steps and you’re done. Make a new layer between your mask layer and your texture one and with a round brush (make sure it’s slightly bigger than the one you used for the layer mask) use it underneath your char. That way it will look as though it’s stroked but it will have a cool effect since it’s not even XD.
Now all you have to do is play a little with the colors. Make a new layer above your previous layers and fill it with #020023, set it on Exclusion on 100% Opacity. Another new layer and fill it with #B3C5E1 and set it on Saturation 26%. Now take this gradient and set it on Multiply 38%.

All you have to do now is add text and border and that’s that XD.
My Layer Palette:

Tutorial Three
[ No Comments ] Posted by Ka-chan about 1137 days ago in Tutorials
Okay this is an easy tutorial that can be also used for manga pictures. Mainly because we’re gonna take a normal colored fan art and desaturate it.
We’re going to go from this:

To this:

Take your original picture, cut out what you want and then resize it. At this moment it should be looking like this.

Now duplicate your layer and set the above one on Soft Light. Go back to the Normal layer and go to Filter->Sharpen->Sharpen. It should look like this.

Okay make a new layer and hit Alt+Ctrl+Shift+E so you’ll stamp everything that you did until now on the new layer. Now go to Image->Adjustments->Desaturate and your picture will be now black and white.

Delete all the layers you had until now except the Desaturated one. It’s not really important to delete them but I think it’s easier to work with only a few layers and you don’t need those anymore, just the black and white one is important now. After you’re done with that take this texture and set it above your layer on Multiply.

It should look like this.

I thought my picture was too dark so I went to Edit->Adjustments->Brightness/Contrast and played with the options there. At this point you can choose whatever you like, depending on your picture.
Now take your Polygonal Lasso Tool and trace around your character.

After that cut the selected part and delete the layer with the gray area. Now take this texture and set it underneath your black and white layer.

Result:

As you probably noticed I moved the picture a little bit to the left so I’ll have more room on the right if I wanna write something. Okay now on your B&W layer click right on your mouse and go to Blending Options. There go to Stroke and choose the color white size 5 pixels (you can choose another size or color if you want; anything as long as it looks good XD). What I got:

Almost done! Almost done! Hahaha XD Okay now take this light texture, set it on Lighten and go to Edit->Transform->Flip Horizontal. I did this because I wanted the more colorful part on the right where the character was. Now duplicate the light texture and transform it again but this time Flip Vertical.

You can now add your text in the right side and I used this texture on Lighten above the text so it would look slightly purple XD.

Now make a new layer above all of the others and fill it with this color #FCE5BE; set the layer on color burn 70% Opacity. Make a new layer and this time fill it with this color #020023 set this layer on Exclusion, Opacity 100%.
This is the last step. Make a new layer go to Edit->Stroke and choose one pixel/black color for the border. With this, you’re officially done XD.
Here’s my layer palette if you guys didn’t understand something. The layers in which the small eye didn’t appear on the left were the ones which I deleted afterwards since I didn’t need them anymore XD (after the lasso tool part to be more exact).
